Making sense of ourselves

Our Narratives

Narratives are the stories we tell about ourselves. They help us make sense of who and what we are; and locate where we feel we belong in life. But all stories take unexpected turns. Relationships shift as people change. Events fracture assumed certainties. And sometimes we are the architects of our own misfortune. Everyone at some point time, loses their place and purpose, within their own wider narrative.

Reconciliation and Growth

Suffering - despite it’s hardship - can also be a place of reconciliation and growth. Working through our own personal experiences - even painful ones - with someone we trust and who cares for us; not only lightens the burden of suffering, but can also transform the ways in which we understand ourselves.

Connecting Past, Present and Future

As a counsellor, I try to help clients evolve a broader personal narrative; one that connects past truth, with present reality and future possibilty. Developing a 'narrative coherence' to our sometimes fragmented lives, deepens our personal maturity, whilst accommodating greater self-acceptance.

Maturity

When we can fully and truthfully inhabit our past, present and future as a unity; we become less threatened by life’s unforeseen and inevitable circumstances. As we mature - which has little to do with how old we are - we are better able to self-reflect, and regulate our responses to change.
